Steelmaker Cleveland Cliffs to close three steel mills in Pennsylvania and Illinois
Two plants in Pennsylvania, one in Stilton and one in Conshohocken, and one in Riverdale, Illinois, are shutting down production due to “insufficient demand and pricing.” The company said it was being hit by low demand and prices for some of its products, such as high-carbon steel plates.
It is stated:- “These temporary, indefinite shutdowns are a necessary response to the lack of demand and pricing for the products produced at the affected plants, including railroads, specialty steel plates and high-carbon steel plates, all of which are not part of Cliffs' core business focus.”
The shutdown is said to be indefinite and will begin on or about June 30, at which time 60 days' notice will be given as required by federal law. Cleveland-Cliffs said about 950 workers will lose their jobs during the shutdown.
